Leon Bonnat
French Academic Painter, 1833-1922,was a French painter. He was born in Bayonne, but from 1846 to 1853 he lived in Madrid, Spain, where his father owned a bookshop. In Madrid he received his artistic training under Madrazo. He later worked in Paris, where he became known as a leading portraitist. His many portraits show the influence of Velazquez and the Spanish realists. He won a medal of honor at Paris in 1869, where he became one of the leading artists of his day. Bonnat went on to become a professor at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1882. In May 1905 he succeeded Paul Dubois as director. His vivid portrait-painting is his most characteristic work, but his subject pictures, such as the Martyrdom of St Denis in the Pantheon, are also famous. Samuel Lovett Waldo
American Painter, 1783-1861 American painter. After attending a country school and working on his father farm, he decided at the age of 16 to become an artist. He took lessons from Joseph Steward (1753-1822), a retired minister who operated a portrait studio in Hartford, CT. Waldo opened his own studio in Hartford in 1803, before moving on to paint portraits in Litchfield, CT, and Charleston, SC. In 1806, bearing letters of introduction to Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley, Waldo travelled to London, where he studied at the Royal Academy. His portrait of Mr M Dougle (untraced) was shown at the Royal Academy in 1808.
Jakub Schikaneder
(February 27, 1855, Prague - November 15, 1924, Prague) was a Czech painter, known for his soft paintings of the outdoors, often lonely in mood. The National Gallery in Prague held an exhibition of his paintings from May 1998 until January 1999. He was descended from Urban Schikaneder, the elder brother of the librettist Emanuel Schikaneder.
